Sod calculator
Work out sod for a new lawn. US units: feet, inches and cubic feet. Results update as you type.
How to use this calculator
Measure the length and width of the lawn area. Enter the sod piece size from your supplier.
For curved lawns, measure the widest points and let the extra for cuts cover the trimming.
How it's calculated
Pieces = area × (1 + extra) ÷ piece size, rounded up. Pallets divide the total area by the pallet coverage.
Worked example
A lawn 30 ft × 20 ft is 600 sq ft. Add 5% for cuts: 630 sq ft, which is 236 sod pieces or 2 pallets of 450 sq ft.
Common questions
When should I lay sod?
Cooler, damp months are usually easiest because the grass needs less watering to root. Avoid frozen, waterlogged or very hot, dry ground.
How soon do I need to lay it?
As soon as possible after delivery, ideally the same day. Rolled grass deteriorates quickly.
Do I need topsoil first?
If the ground is poor or uneven, a layer of topsoil helps. Use the topsoil calculator.
