Turf calculator

Work out turf for a new lawn. Australian units: metres, centimetres and litres. Results update as you type.

How to use this calculator

Measure the length and width of the lawn area. Enter the roll size from your supplier.

For curved lawns, measure the widest points and let the extra for cuts cover the trimming.

How it's calculated

Rolls = area × (1 + extra) ÷ roll size, rounded up.

Worked example

A lawn 6 m × 5 m is 30 m². Add 5% for cuts and you need 32 rolls of 1 m².

Common questions

When should I lay turf?

Cooler, damp months are usually easiest because the grass needs less watering to root. Avoid frozen, waterlogged or very hot, dry ground.

How soon do I need to lay it?

As soon as possible after delivery, ideally the same day. Rolled grass deteriorates quickly.

Do I need topsoil first?

If the ground is poor or uneven, a layer of topsoil helps. Use the garden soil calculator.
